AI-based image recognition to make healthcare more efficient

We at Klinik see a lot of potential in artificial intelligence-based image recognition as part of symptom assessment.

In March, Klinik participated in a seminar on artificial intelligence and virtual reality organised by HUS (the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa), which highlighted, for example, the new opportunities offered by artificial intelligence in healthcare. Klinik is heavily involved in developing new ways of improving the efficiency of healthcare.

“As a practical example, artificial intelligence-based image recognition could help, for example, in analysing an image of a mole. In this way, artificial intelligence can facilitate the work of professionals”, says the Head of Product Development at Klinik, Jukka Happonen, who attended the HUS event.

Clear cases could be handled using image recognition, without the patient having to physically attend the health centre. In some cases, it could be used to avoid unnecessary visits to the doctor, when you can, with reasonable certainty, say that the symptoms do not require further action, but only monitoring.
Another theme to emerge at the seminar was the recognition of mental health problems using artificial intelligence.

“Our online service in use at health centres is already capable of recognising stress and anxiety to some extent, but the service could be expanded. There is a lot of potential in combining psychiatry and artificial intelligence”, says Happonen.

The HUS seminar on artificial intelligence and virtual reality in specialised healthcare was held for the second time this spring. The seminar, targeted at nurses, doctors, healthcare decision-makers and start-ups, has become immensely popular among finnish practitioners in the field of healthcare. #HUSAIVR18
